Oil and gas drilling is a dirty business that, if done improperly, has the potential to do substantial harm to national parks and other public lands.
The drilling of oil ANWR is a controversial topic among the oil industry, politicians, and environmentalists. The North Slope, where the drilling for oil is highly observed, is the home of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, the Naval Petroleum Reserve No.4, and the Prudhoe Bay Oil Field. Drilling is still barred in national parks. But the reversal of some state bans coincides with efforts to expand exploration in other previously off-limits locations: offshore in coastal states, near Aztec ruins in New Mexico and in some urban parks. The NPS works with the owners of mineral rights, as well as with other federal and state agencies and stakeholders to mitigate the potential adverse effects of energy and mineral development on park resources and values. Mineral development in or near parks includes oil and gas, coal and hardrock mining, sand and gravel mining, and geothermal.
