Oil spill brings doom to reef

27 Jul 2016 Queensland authorities say they have identified the vessel that spilled up to 15 tonnes of oil off Cape Upstart in July 2015.

Amazon reef is huge — and under threat from Total oil drilling. A reef at the mouth of the Amazon is almost six times larger than initial reports, scientists say — meaning the recently discovered site is threatened by proposed oil drilling. Nadia Pontes reports from Brazil. The Rena oil spill occurred off the coast of Tauranga in New Zealand. The spill was caused by the grounding of MV Rena on the Astrolabe Reef. The Rena was a container ship and cargo vessel owned by the Greek shipping company Costamare Inc., through one of its subsidiary companies Daina Shipping, and chartered by the Mediterranean Shipping Company. The spill has been described as New Zealand's worst maritime environmental disaster. Oil floating on the water’s surface can be deposited directly on corals in an intertidal zone when the water level drops at low tide. Rough seas can mix lighter oil products into the water column (like shaking up a bottle of salad dressing), where they can drift down to coral reefs. The 2010 Great Barrier Reef oil spill occurred on 3 April 2010, when the Chinese bulk coal carrier, MV Shen Neng 1 ran aground east of Rockhampton in Central Queensland, Australia. The vessel is owned by Shenzhen Energy Transport Co. Ltd. The ship was more than 10 km outside the shipping lane. It struck the reef late in the afternoon of 3 April, scraping along the reef for a considerable distance and creating the longest known grounding scar on the Great Barrier Reef. Scientists have already figured out that oil spills cause physical deformities in fish , but now they’ve also discovered that exposure to oil affects reef fishes’ brain and behaviour in a way that threatens their survival.
